Cyber Space & Scout Camps

By wendyokill

I have to say I’m a little scared at the moment.  The PC is becoming very tired and the decision has been taken to get a new one.  You can hear the poor thing almost wheezing after every click of the mouse and if you dare to run two applications at once it will tell you at least one of them has, “encountered a problem and needs to close”.  Merely opening my favourites on Internet Explorer takes a good 30 seconds, and then the mouse pointer refuses to hover over the required link.

I’ve done all the comparisons on various websites and spoken to my good friend Neil who works in I.T.  And I am confident that I have chosen a good one.  The Acer Aspire X1301 with a 19″ widescreen monitor, Windows 7 operation system, 640GB hard drive, 3MB Ram. (Don’t I sound knowledgable), I know nothing it’s all numbers, but Neil tells me they are good ones!

So part of tomorrows schedule is to nip into Comet and pick it up, bring it home and set it up. . . . .  And there the scared part just set in.

I have spent all evening deleting unwanted files, moving important files and treasured photos and my entire itunes library, onto my 8GB memory stick which is now sitting safely in my pocket.  My entire PC, cyber world, is sitting in my pocket.  What if it doesn’t work again?  What if I can’t find my tweetdeck account?  What if I can’t find this blog page again? Will I be able to remember all my passwords that the PC currently remembers for me? Have I really got everything off of this metal box that sits in front of me that I could possibly need, and if not will the whole world crash around my ears?  Can you hear me hyperventilating as you read?!

OK OK.  I know I’ve gone too far, it was for comic effect.  Because, did you know?  We probably can really all survive just for a bit, without a computer.  The world won’t stop turning, as Mike would say, I blame the invention of electricity.  It’s all gone mad since then.

Apart from PC troubles it has been a big weekend for my daughter Lauren, who most definitely has proved there is no need for electricity.

Lauren has spent this weekend camping at Hamlet Wood, our local District Scout Camp Site.  Lauren has been a member of the Scout Movement since joining the Cubs on her 9th birthday.  Now at 13 years old she is a member of Tovil Scout Troop, and was fortunate enough, to be eligible to participate, in this weekends selection camp, to be a part of the UK Contingent of Explorer Scouts that will go to the 22nd World Jamboree in Sweden in 2011.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.  The World Jamboree only takes place every four years and you must be between 14 and 18 years old to take part, so it really is a once in a lifetime chance.

There were about 12 scouts at Hamlet Wood this weekend, all hoping to be selected to represent Maidstone West.  Only 2 will be successful.  Lauren had a fantastic weekend, despite the heavy rain overnight on Saturday.  Lauren commented that they all quickly became great friends, and it was, “horrible to think that you were competing against each other for a place to go to Sweden”.

We will find out by post early in the week if Lauren was successful.

Take a look it looks amazing.

Well I was up very late last night, catching up on paperwork, and up very early this morning to muck out horses, so time to call it a night.  Time to switch off this PC, pretty much for the last time, and hope I get back online again very soon!
